Season Reports

Montana Elk Hunt

I just returned from a 9 day Montana elk hunt with no punched tags. I had my old man carrying the camera and long time friend Bob Dobson hoping to fill his first MT tag. The hunt started off great with multiple sightings and a good amount of bugling but we were unable to seal the deal. (Day 3) Monday afternoon we moved camp across the hill from a good bull in a clearcut and we had some great activity that evening with multiple bulls bugling and getting close to shooting distance. My old man left Monday night to head back to work in WI as a cold front and rain storm blew in. The next morning we spotted a mountain lion in the same clearcut as the big bull and then we spent the next 2-1/2 days battling the wind and rain and the elk shut off and moved out. We spent the rest of the week trying to relocate the elk but never made it happen. At the end of 9 days we put 94 miles on the boots and spent 9 nights battling mother nature and went home hungry and a lot more educated on the elk. Long story short it was a great hunt with a lot of great memories sadly for Bob his first MT tag will go unpunched but I have the rest of the season to wrap mine around a good bulls antlers.
