Michigan’s 2 day youth hunt has quickly become 2 of my favorite days to be in the woods. My son, Jacob (9), and I had a blast trying for his first deer. Unfortunately, Jacob’s first deer eluded us, but we had a great time together. Saturday, we hunted some public land and Jacob used his Kodabow crossbow. That was a fun hang & hunt in some woods where my friend suggested the deer would be headed to some oaks. We had two does come by 60 yards away at last light and that was it.
Sunday evening found us watching a near-home soybean field that I’d scouted a couple nights ago. This time Jacob carried the Johnston Muzzleloader that I’d put a youth stock on. It’s so nice to be able to dial down the load and still have pinpoint accuracy. We saw a doe and fawn early, then about 10 minutes before last light, a young 3 pointer stepped out at 60 yards and tempted us. Jacob opted to pass the young buck though, and any bigger ones that may have been there didn’t appear, so we left empty-handed and the 2 day weekend we wait for all year was gone in a flash. Time to look forward to October and some more bowhunting with him and his Kodabow.
