Season Reports

Late Season Scouting

14 degrees below zero is enough to make someone who’s sound of mind stay home next to the fire. I’ve been accused of not being too bright and so that’s my excuse for being woods-bound in the killer cold we’ve been having. Braving weather that’s trying to kill you is all part of deer hunting as far as I’m concerned – A neccessary evil if you will.

James and I have been hitting the woods lately trying to finish as much scouting as possible before one of our favorite areas of State Land closes as of March 1st. The time crunch takes it’s toll, especially with our wives, as we try to spend as much time putting on as many miles in the woods as we can.

We’ve found some good areas with excellent travel corridors, funnels, bedding areas and buck sign.

The dead of winter is the perfect time to not only check up on country you’re already familiar with but also to find new hunting haunts. This is the time to be finding specific trees and clearing them out for a stand – or backtrailing big tracks in order to find buck bedding areas. Who knows, you might even stumble upon a shed antler or find the track of “the big one” that got away from you the previous fall.
