Killing Switchgrass

roundup sprayed switchgrass field comparison week to week

I decided to kill my field of switchgrass behind my house this year. To do so, it’s going to take multiple sprayings this spring, summer, and possibly fall. I started with a controlled burn earlier this spring. Two weeks ago, I sprayed it with Roundup mixed with crop oil and Ammonium Sulfate. Here’s a picture showing the field 1 week after spraying, and again today (two weeks after spraying). My plan is to next disc and plant with Roundup Ready Soybeans. I’m wondering, however, if this looks “yellow and crispy” enough to disc now or if I should wait a bit longer, or if I should re-spray, wait, and then disc & plant. Any ideas? Stay tuned for more from the Back 20!

  1. Shawn Vanlandingham says:

Round up gives you a 3-4 week window so if you want to kill more off and it’s been a couple weeks already I would try another round and then again in another month if you have weeds competing with the beans. You have a nice view now, are you going to use plot screen to hide it?

  2. view is only for people standing on my deck, so I won’t be hiding this one ;o)
